Great to see Mosaic Ventures start a podcast. Perfect introduction and looking forward to the next ones.
As for structure of a company, we actually thought a lot about the structure/makeup of Giant Swarm from the very beginning. It being our 3rd company together as a founding team, you start thinking about things like that. I really like Dee Hock’s Birth of the Chaordic Age, and especially for developers it is already very true that we/they are not really working for money but for a lot of different things, hence you need to think about that.
When Dee Hock helped start VISA the question was: “If anything imaginable was possible, if there were no constraints whatever, what would be the nature of an ideal organization to create and world’s premier system for the exchange of value? — Founding principle of VISA”
So how should a developer led infrastructure startup look like? Something build for developer by developers. Believing in a developer led future, knowing that the best people are not all in the same place, and thinking that customers are everywhere, led us to build Giant Swarm as a distributed company from the start, something that already helped us greatly.
With developers being at the center, and innovation happening at the interconnection between customer and the company, we need the ultimate decision capability at the edges, which again means that we need transparency to allow people to have all the information to make decisions.
We had a veto based hiring process at our last companies but we wanted to take a step further and took buffer as an example to go with a transparent salary system, something that already proved amazingly valuable at different steps. We just held a talk at HR Tech World about it.
Looking forward to having a chat some time with Mike on what he is seeing out there as good constructions, or where work forces are going (freelancer / fixed workers) and a lot more subjects.
